Your air conditioner has been off for a couple months. Your utility bills have started to come down again from the summer highs. You’re not getting roasted with $400 electricity bills for the time being, so solar may not be at the forefront of your mind. But in actuality, this is a GREAT time to keep your solar project plans on track. Hard to fathom, but read on!
Here are our reasons why winter is actually a great time to execute your solar project plans.
#1 Build your bank with the electric company!
Net metering refers to the accounting process power providers use to measure how much solar power you’ve “sold” to them. When the panels produce surplus power during the daylight hours, energy flows back to the utility company earning you credits toward future electric bills. It’s kinda like a piggy bank with a sticky note reading “electric bills”. Now, unless you have electric heat, your consumption or use of electricity takes a nose dive in the winter because you’re not cooling your home with a 110-degree heat index outside. During this cooler season your solar system produces the power your using, and then some.
Solar owners make their year during winter in Texas. Once installed, you’ll have months of surplus solar production building up your credits to be used during the hot summer months when your A/C is on around the clock. It’s kinda like that beer fund that pays off every Saturday, without the empty calories.
#2 Faster installation schedules!
Let’s face it, when the sun is only out for a few hours and the day seems to be more overcast than not we aren’t chomping at the bit to buy solar panels. Smaller installation pipelines mean you get taken care of quick. No one wants to get all excited about making the switch to solar and then wait 6 months for installation.
Everything moves faster in the winter, permits, HOA applications, and utility connection all turn around in half the time.
Let’s not forget about our amazing installation team. Summer is great but man those 100 plus degree days take a toll on our guys and gals.
So if you do go solar during the winter you’ll have the most appreciation from the installers!
#3 Don’t be fooled, Electric Rates ALWAYS INCREASE DURING THE SUMMER
Yes, we live in a deregulated power market that allows us a choice from 101 power providers on powertochoose.org all fighting for your business driving down price per kWh on short term plans. Do not forget, 50-60% of your electric bill cost is transmission and delivery charges from CenterPoint and those rates have to keep up with the high summer demand and we all pay more to keep the lights on!
So you could wait to go solar and continue to pay those increases, but if you’re like me you’re not allowed to buy toilet paper without a coupon!
#4 Winter is the slow season for solar, so you can get a better deal
Summer is the busiest time of year for most installers. During the slower winter months, we’re slower, and that means you can save big time. Fewer people are shopping for solar power during this season and you’ll undoubtedly get the best deals of the year during this time. Just call and find out for yourself.
